One way share - Bike Index shares code with 529 but not vice versa. It’s smart to register on both platforms - Bike Index has a more intuitive format for searching suspect bikes by make, model and color or by serial number. Drop-down menu style for searching on 529 is clunky and needs updating (“teal” can’t be searched but by “green” or by “blue”, and other anomalies with pre configured selections). All for any platform that brings stolen bikes back to their legal owners. A watchful community is the key to either service working efficiently.
Bike Index has a way to search our stolen listings, and did that for a while, but they have (currently) chosen to stop. We hope that they choose to search our listings again at some point as we're all in it to stop bike theft!
In terms of color searching, we control the inputs and outputs so that as a searcher you don't have to guess the color that the owner chose to register. By keeping these to a selected set, you are more likely to find a matching bike.
Is it a good idea to register one's bike on BOTH Project 529 and Bike Index or do they share information? https://bikeindex.org
Hi Javier - We do share information, so it's not necessary to register on both, but it's free so there's no problem doing it in both places.
Good to know. Thank you!
